This past Saturday, a stray dog in Macedonia was killed by decapitation as helpless onlookers were forced to watch the horror unfold.
According to Saving Macedonian Strays, an individual wielding an axe killed the dog in the middle of the day as people sat on the patio of a restaurant. The organization shared a video that featured the aftermath of the attack, which includes harrowing scenes of the dog lying in his own pool of blood while still breathing.
The man then walked away from the scene “as if nothing happened.” According to the organization, he was soon arrested. Sadly, he faces only up to 6 months in jail, which is the maximum sentence he can receive in Macedonia.
It was a senseless act of violence that not only left a vulnerable stray dog dead, but a group of individuals traumatized by what they had witnessed.
This isn’t the first instance of stray dogs facing cruelty in Macedonia. In fact, it’s an ongoing issue.
Just in the past few weeks, there have been reports that stray dogs in the country are being subjected to a sudden string of poisonings, which has left dozens of dogs dying on the streets.
These poisonings have led to an outcry from animal lovers in the country, and hundreds have been protesting against them. However, it’s unclear who has been poisoning the dogs, as the poison is easily available to purchase.
Attacks on stray dogs are happening all over the world because countries believe stray dogs are public health risks. However, homeless dogs are not a menace or a problem. The problem is their overpopulation. It’s a serious issue, but killing isn’t the solution.
We need a humane solution and we need it fast. Please consider supporting 600 Million Dogs, and together we can build a safer world for dogs.
