Yell, Clap, Make Noise: Keep Your Animals Safe From Coyotes!

Tips for protecting your animals from coyotes!

A number of cats have recently been killed by coyotes in California's San Francisco Bay Area, to the horror of their human family members. [1] [2]

“Wild animals, including coyotes, are our neighbors, and learning to coexist with them is important,” said the local police of Pleasanton. [1] Coyote attacks have been on the rise in the Bay Area recently. [3]

Coyotes are native to North America and can live anywhere from the tundra to the desert — in cities, suburbs, and rural areas. [4]

Here are some tips to keep your companion animals safe from hungry coyotes!

Coexisting peacefully with wild animals saves their lives, as well as the lives of your companion animals.

Use a Leash: When walking your dog, keep them on a leash. This helps you keep them close and safe, especially if a coyote is nearby.

Supervise Outdoor Time: Avoid leaving your dogs and cats unattended outdoors, particularly during dawn and dusk when coyotes are most active.

Secure Your Yard: Make sure your yard is well-fenced. Adding coyote rollers to the top of the fence can help prevent coyotes from climbing over.

Keep Cats Indoors: Keeping cats indoors is the safest option. If your cat loves the outdoors, consider creating a secure enclosure or "catio" where they can safely enjoy the fresh air.

Make Noise: If you encounter a coyote, make loud noises to scare them away. Yelling, clapping, or using a noise-making device can be effective and humane.
