Adopted at 13: Most Won't Be So Lucky ...

Senior dogs and cats face a difficult road to finding a forever home.

Good news: the oldest dog in a Pennsylvania shelter found her forever home!

A 13-year-old large purebred dog named Sadie was rescued by the Pennsylvania SPCA Animal Law Enforcement, along with 14 other dogs who all had a difficult road to recovery. The dogs had been suffering from severe neglect and were hospitalized for weeks with skin conditions before being cleared for adoption.

“Her new family was specifically looking for a senior dog and fell in love with Sadie at first sight.” [1]

Senior animals are often overlooked due to their age.

Sadie’s story of a second chance at a loving home is somewhat rare. Senior dogs have a 25% adoption rate, compared to the 60% adoption rate of younger dogs and puppies. [2] Cats above the age of 7 have a tragic 8% adoption rate, compared to about 60% for younger cats. [2] [3]

While older animals may not have as many years left, the time spent with them is incredibly meaningful, full of love and important life lessons. They are just as deserving of love and affection as all animals!

Love knows no age!

Adopt a Senior Animal: Give an older dog or cat a loving home. Senior animals often have a harder time finding families, but they make wonderful, loyal companions. If you are looking for a calm companion, a quiet senior may be a good fit!

Foster a Senior Animal: If you’re not ready to adopt, consider fostering. Providing a temporary home can make a huge difference in their lives and help them transition out of the shelter environment.

Spread Awareness: Many people are unaware of the difficulties senior animals face in finding a forever home — and the joys of adopting one.

Nacho, a Pilot Pup rescued by 600MillionDogs!

Sadly, stray dogs and cats rarely live long enough to become seniors. Instead, they usually die young, after suffering from injuries, starvation, disease, or from deliberate killing by cruel methods such as beatings, poison, or shootings.

Our mission is to end the number 1 cause of suffering and death for dogs and cats -- overpopulation -- by developing a permanent-lasting birth control cookie that will only need to be eaten one time, and it will in effect spay or neuter -- without surgery.

For just $5 a month, you can join our mission to protect homeless animals from needless suffering. Every dollar brings us closer to a world where every stray animal knows safety and love.

Donate $5 a month and watch your generosity transform lives.

We can never thank you enough for caring!
